Downtown consists of a cluster of historic neighborhoods that surround the old city of Cairo which was established by Khedive Ismail. Downtown is located in the heart of Cairo, and it contains several historic neighborhoods such as Ataba, Abdeen, Qasr El Einy, & Bab Louq to mention a few. The Downtown area is characterized by its European Architecture style with its unique planned streets, and commercial activities. The area residents are known for their cultural and social sophistication. Talat Harb is considered the most active commercial street, and Tahrir Square is a vital landmark. Some of Downtown’s imperfections are the heavy traffic, density of commercial activities, proliferation of commercial cafes, and proximity from Tahrir Square and Interior Ministry which can have a negative effect on residents in times of political crisis or protests. Downtown is one of the high-end areas in Cairo, its prominent landmarks are: Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, Talat Harb Square, American University. The neighbourhood can be reached via 6th October bridge, Ramsis street and other roads, in addition to the Metro.
